Testing for Title Markup using the WAVE Toolbar for Firefox

Overview

Strengths

  • Provides a visualization of the accessibility of a web page through the use of inline icons

Weakness

  • Does not warn of missing title element or h1 element information
  • Does not seem to identify presence of title content
  • If a heading is being hidden by CSS the heading will also not be seen in the visualization

Step 1: Select

Procedure

  1. Press the “Outline” button on the toolbar
  2. Icons are used to identify the title and h1 elements on the page
    • h1 element icon: Wave h1 element icon
  3. Using the h1 icon to identify whether the page has an h1 element
  4. Using the h1 icon to identify the h1 content is a sub set of the title content (view title in title bar of browser)
  5. Using the h1 icon to identify if the title content describes both the website and sub page information

Procedure

  1. Press the “Errors, Features and Alerts” button on the toolbar
    • h1 element icon: Wave h1 element icon
  2. Using the h1 icon to identify whether the page has an h1 element
  3. Using the h1 icon to identify the h1 content is a sub set of the title content (view title in title bar of browser)
  4. Using the h1 icon to identify if the title content describes both the website and sub page information
  5. NOTE: If the h1 element is hidden from view using css or javascript techniqus it will usually be hidden in the WAVE view and the h1 icon will not be visible
