Testing for Title Markup using the WAVE Web Accessibility Evaluation Tool

Overview

Strengths

  • Provides a visualization of the H1 content of a web page through the use of inline icons

Weakness

  • Does not provide information about the TITLE element content
  • Does not warn of missing title element or h1 element information
  • If a heading is being hidden by CSS the heading will also not be seen in the visualization

Step 1: Enter the URL of the Page to Evaluate

Procedure

  1. Enter the URL of the web page to check on the WAVE request form

Step 2: Identify Icons Associated with Title and H1 information

Procedure

  1. Select “Outline” link from WAVE menu options (See red arrow)
  2. Icons are used to identify the title and h1 elements on the page
    • Does provide an error if TITLE element is missing WAVE Icon for missing TTILE element
    • Title icon is NOT related to the TITLE element content, but the TITLE attribute of elements in the body of the web page, so should ignored for this test: Wave title icon
    • h1 element icon: Wave h1 element icon
  3. Using the icons to identify whether the page has both a title and h1 element
  4. Using the icons to identify the h1 content is a sub set of the title content
  5. Using the icons to identify if the title content describes both the website and sub page information
  6. NOTE: If the h1 element is hidden from view using css or javascript techniqus it will usually be hidden in the WAVE view and the h1 icon will not be visible
