Document Reading Order
Blind users do not experience web-based content in the same way as sighted users. The screen reader programs used by blind users do not voice any of the layout and positioning specific markup. They voice the content based on the source order of the HTML. In other words, they effectively linearize the content.
In this test we want to find out:
- Does document reading order make sense?
Step 1: Disable all page styling
View > Style > No Style
Step 2: Verify Document Order
Read the page from top to bottom and determine if the linear order of the document makes sense.
Rules Evaluated with this Technique
When tables are used for layout, make sure the reading order makes sense when layout table markup is removed.
When CSS absolute positioning is used for layout, make sure the reading order makes sense when stylesheets are disabled.
